With this publication, we offer an exciting insight into the research conducted at our institute, as well as the events, conferences, and other recent developments happening at ZEW. Evidence-based economic research is currently more in demand than ever, as one global crisis follows the next. No sooner than most European governments had relaxed pandemic restrictions, they were back in crisis mode with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. While the war in Ukraine has rightfully been absorbing the attention of policymakers, the long-term responsibilities must not be neglected. One of these responsibilities is climate change and the energy transition, to which the ZEW Annual Report 2021 devotes a focus: The increasing occurrence of extreme weather events around the globe, which often claim numerous lives and cause enormous economic damage, once again put the focus on the urgency of curbing global warming. With the help of economic methods, we analyse the emergence of environmental problems, evaluate climate and energy policy instruments to solve these problems and make economic policy recommendations.
