More than a venue

There’s no doubt that sustainability has emerged as a key trend in the global events sector. More and more clients are looking to reduce the environmental footprint of their events, and the trend is likely to gain even more traction in the post-coronavirus climate. But while clients are seeking more sustainable alternatives, very few venues can deliver truly sustainable events. ICC Sydney can.
ICC Sydney’s commitment to sustainability runs deep. The landmark convention and event space on Sydney’s Darling Harbour, which opened in 2016 following a major redevelopment, is Gold Certified by the US Green Building Council for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). Many of the building’s features and fixtures were designed with energy efficiency in mind, and 4% of the venue’s electricity use is supplied by a 520kWh, community founded, photovoltaic (PV) array.
But look beyond the innovative design features and you’ll see that ICC Sydney is committed to helping clients tap into unique programs that contribute to the preservation of Sydney’s natural environment and the betterment of local communities.

People, planet, profit
ICC Sydney has long advocated a triple bottom line approach to business. The venue runs a number of progressive CSR initiatives, from a Reconciliation Action Plan to facilitate better engagement with Australia’s Aboriginal population to a Legacy Program that gives clients opportunities to give back to the city’s social and cultural capital.

Alignment to SDGs
It’s one thing to preach sustainability, but it’s quite another to say exactly what you intend to do to get there. Yet that is exactly what ICC Sydney has done. In 2018, the organisation identified six relevant SDGs and committed to various actions under each.

Sustainable cities
The numbers don’t lie. Sydney is currently ranked 8th in the world on the Global Destination Sustainability Index. The result owes much to programs like the City of Sydney’s Sustainable Destination Partnership. As a key member of the partnership, ICC Sydney is working actively with other businesses to make Sydney a truly sustainable destination.
