Legacy may be the buzzword of the moment but Vienna is a city that knows more about it than most. The Vienna World’s Fair in 1873, whose 150th anniversary is being celebrated this year, marked the city's beginning as a destination for flagship international congresses and magnificent hotels
Today, the Austrian capital is one of the leading destinations for medical congresses in Europe. Yet its success can be traced back to the Third International Medical Congress held during the 1873 Vienna World's Fair.
A landmark event, the driving force behind it was the Second Viennese Medical School. Under Carl von Rokitansky, a trained pathologist, its focus was exploring the causes, symptoms and transmission of diseases, while developing new diagnostic and therapeutic methods. The School and Rokitansky were instrumental in establishing Vienna as one of the most visionary scientific locations of its day.
