While Japan is innovating in healthcare, science and technology, its journey to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals is equally important. In this vein, our January 2022 issue shares some stories on sustainability achievements in Japan. We also introduce some of our partners who will be presenting at our upcoming “New Ideas on Sustainable Business Events” webinars on 3 and 10 March 2022. It is also with great pride and anticipation that we introduce our keynote speaker at these webinars, Anna Abdelnoor (pictured) the co-founder and CEO of isla. isla is an independent industry body supporting the events sector transition to a more sustainable future. Prior to forming isla, Anna had worked in event production for global brands, but last year turned her focus to sustainability in the meetings and events industry as part of the world’s reset and recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

In June 2020, JAL set a new long-range goal of zero CO2 emissions by 2050. They seek to reduce their CO2 output through four main initiatives: developing and using sustainable aviation fuel; renewing their fleet to more fuel-efficient aircraft; consuming less fuel in daily operations; and emissions trading.

Other Future Conventions to Japan
- Sendai will host the 41st International Conference on Thermoelectrics (ICT) in 2022. ICT will be jointly held with the 7th Asian Conference on Thermoelectrics (ACT). Pre/post conference delegates who want to explore Sendai will find this “Experience Sendai Activities” website useful.
- The 15th International Conference on Copepoda (ICOC) will be held in Hiroshima in 2024, returning to Japan after 34 years.

Japan has been voted winner of the Most Resilient MICE Destination in this year's M&C Asia Stella Awards 2021 organised by MICE industry magazine M&C Asia. All nominations and winners were voted on by readers of M&C Asia and endorsed by industry professionals.

Tokyo is World's Fifth Safest City
According to The Safe Cities Index 2021 report by The Economist Intelligence Unit, Tokyo ranks as the fifth safest city in the world. The Index, which ranks 60 cities across 76 indicators covering digital, health, infrastructure, personal and environmental security. The addition of the new environmental security pillar reflects the increased importance of sustainability issues and climate adaptation measures following the coronavirus pandemic. Tokyo is highest ranked for Health Security while Osaka takes the fifth spot, resulting in two Japanese cities in the Top 5. In terms of Infrastructure Security, Tokyo bags the fifth spot.

2050 Zero Carbon Cities in Japan
|
|
As of 30 Nov 2021, 492 local governments in Japan, representing some 112 million people or 88.5% of Japan's population, have announced their commitment to net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Did You Know?
Surrounded by ocean and with strong offshore winds, Goto City in Nagasaki Prefecture utilises its geographical features to reduce CO2 emissions. It is the first in Japan to introduce a floating offshore wind energy system where the wind turbine sits on the water and is moored by three chains. This makes it easy to install and move, with minimal impact on the environment.
